Metaphor
The Metaphor can be used in many different ways. Sometimes people get confused with metaphor and simile. But
a metaphor is a figure of speech in which a term is compared to something applicable in order to suggest a
resemblance. The difference between simile and metaphor is that a simile is always uses
with the word "like" or "as" and metaphor is used with the world "is".
A way to understand a metaphor is to see it as a simile but without the word "like".A lot of
people get confuse with those two words but is not that hard to understand. An example of a simile
is "His skin was as cold as ice". It's comparing a persons skin with ice. A metaphor is comparing a
relationship without the word "like" or "as".
This is a great poem where metaphor is being used well
The force that through the green fuse drives the flower by Dylan Thomas (1945-1953)
"The force that through the green fuse drives the flower
Drives my green age; that blasts the roots of trees
Is my destroyer.
And I am dumb to tell the crooked rose
My youth is bent by the same wintry fever."
This is the first stanza of the poem here is an example of a metaphor. The metaphor in this
stanza is that the first line " the force that through the green fuse drives flowers". fuse is blood and is
like is getting it's energry to the flower and it must drive. This metaphor has a deep relationship with
the force of nature and life force with in the flowers trees and also life. The metaphor after that has the
word green also wants to contribute with the human life.
A Meditation for his Mistress
You are a lovely July-flower,
Yet one rude wind or ruffling shower
Will force you hence, and in an hour.
The metaphor in this stanza is in the first is comparing a flower to July. The reason for that is
because the weather is really nice in July and flowers are lovely. The following sentences are defending
what will happen to the flower in an hour. meaning everything can change so quick just like the weather.
The same way the weather can change the flower can change also.
In July the weather can change at any given moment it can turn windy and the whole weather has changed
around. That goes for the flower if the wind blows by fast and hard it can distory the flower as it can
mess up the weather. Then in about an hour everything can changed and go back to normal.
A narrow wind complains all day
How some one treated him;
Nature, like us, is sometimes caught
Without her diadem.
There are a few metaphor in this stanza it's comparing the wind to life. The metaphor here is that
the wind complains all day has if someone has treated them. The same way a person will complain for
any little thing. when they say narrow is like is only thinking one way it wants it it's way. in other
other narrow minded people tend to miss the bigger picture.
All in all, all these poems and metaphor are comparing itself to nature. metaphors can be found in
many different places and you could always find them in poems. metaphors can be used in many different
ways just not using the word "like" or "as".
